چکیده

Wool scouring sludge is the solid waste product of anaerobic treatment of wool scouring effluent. It has a high wool grease content (1316% of the dry weight, 45 -55% of the organic matter), resulting in a low melting point (approx. 45°C). The low melting point, the putty-like physical properties and the odourous. unstable nature of the sludge makes it unsuitable for land application in its raw state. Composting of the sludge was investigated to ascertain its suitability as a treatment method for stabilising wool scouring sludge and improving its suitability as a soil amendment.

An integrated approach of composting methodologies for solid waste management

Organic fraction of solid waste, which upon degradation produces foul smell and generates pathogens, if not properly managed. Composting is not a method of waste disposal but it is a method of waste recycling and used for agricultural purposes. An integrated approach of composting methodology was tested for municipal solid waste management. Solid waste first was composted and after 22 days, was...

Heavy Metals Removal from Sewage Sludge and Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) by Co-Composting Process

Background & Aims of the Study: One of the most important pollutants in drinking water, air and soils is heavy metals. It is very harmful for humans and other live organisms. The purpose of this study was the usage of a co-composting process for removal of heavy metals from municipal solid waste and sewage sludge. Materials and Methods: This experimental study was a condu...

Use of Fenton reaction for the treatment of leachate from composting of different wastes.

The oxidation of leachate coming from the composting of two organic wastes (wastewater sludge and organic fraction of municipal solid wastes) using the Fenton's reagent was studied using different ratios [Fe(2+)]/[COD](0) and maintaining a ratio [H(2)O(2)]/[COD](0) equal to 1. The optimal conditions for Fenton reaction were found at a ratio [Fe(2+)]/[COD](0) equal to 0.1. Both leachates were si...

Emission of volatile organic compounds from composting of different solid wastes: abatement by biofiltration.

Emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced during composting of different organic wastes (source-selected organic fraction of municipal solid wastes (OFMSW), raw sludge (RS) and anaerobically digested wastewater sludge (ADS) and animal by-products (AP)) and its subsequent biofiltration have been studied. Composting was performed in a laboratory scale composting plant (30l) and the e...

Aerobic composting of waste activated sludge: kinetic analysis for microbiological reaction and oxygen consumption.

In order to examine the optimal design and operating parameters, kinetics for microbiological reaction and oxygen consumption in composting of waste activated sludge were quantitatively examined. A series of experiments was conducted to discuss the optimal operating parameters for aerobic composting of waste activated sludge obtained from Kawagoe City Wastewater Treatment Plant (Saitama, Japan)...
